Award-winning documentary, One Winter Story, will be showing at La Perla Del Mar on October 9th and 10th. Filmmakers and subject of film will be present for Q&A. Benefits SLO Women's Shelter.
One Winter Story is an hour-long documentary that explores the life of big-wave surf pioneer and Ph.D scientist, Sarah Gerhardt, a relative unknown who made surfing history in 1999 as the first woman to surf Maverick's, the giant wave in Northern California. Using a montage of film and voice, "One Winter Story" traces Sarah's dramatic journey from poverty and despair to faith and forgiveness as she struggles to find her place both in the line up, and in the world.
Sarah grew up in the San Luis Obispo area, learned to surf there, and was so inspired by a local chemistry teacher that she decided to pursue the subject at Cal Poly, studying physical chemistry, and eventually attaining a doctoral degree in Santa Cruz.

La Perla Del Mar is hosting Adult On-Camera Film Acting Classes this fall every Sunday, 5:30 - 8:30 pm, taught by professional film actor / director / producer Aaron Metchik. Fee is $150.00/month.
Learn the difference between acting for the camera and acting for the stage.
This fall Aaron Metchik teaches a comprehensive film acting class covering script breakdown, character building and methods to help you "live" through experiences with depth, subtlety, and authenticity rather than "perform" them for an audience.
Students will put up at least two scenes a month in class, each to be followed by discussion and critique. Every two months, each student may choose one of their scenes to be filmed from multiple angles and edited together for their demo reel.
Every several months, a "Best Of" showcase will be presented to the general public, where filmed scenes will be projected on a big screen and other scenes will be performed live.
Class instructor, Aaron Metchik, has over 15 years of professional acting experience. He has played major roles in seven motion pictures and over fifteen television shows, opposite such notable stars as Sissy Spacek, Keanu Reeves, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Tim Curry, Jim Belushi, and Rachel Leigh Cook.
Aaron has directed adult and child actors in both theater and film and has also coached professional actors privately, including central coast native mega-star, Zac Efron, before he landed his starring role in High School Musical.
Aaron earned his B.A. at the UCLA Film School. After graduating, he wrote the teenage sports screenplay "Slammin'" for Warner Bros. Studios, and in 2007, he directed the independent feature film "Ten Years Later" from a screenplay that he also wrote. He has another feature film, a comedy, currently in development.
Aaron lives and works in Los Angeles where he studies acting at the world renowned Ivana Chubbuck Studios. (Mrs. Chubbuck is the private acting coach to Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Terrence Howard, Jake Gyllenhaal and many more of Hollywood's elite actors) Aaron studies with Ivana directly in her "Masters Class" every week.
While many of Aaron's students take his classes purely for fun, actors who are considering acting in film and television, should look no further for a place to develop their talents. Over the course of his Spring and Summer sessions, one of his central coast students booked a television promo and got a network screen test for a major new television series. Another has booked several roles in local independent films and several of his students have gotten the opportunity to meet and act for professional casting directors, producers and directors in Los Angeles.
Whether you join this program to pursue the arts as a profession, to build up your demo reel, or simply to enjoy the creative outlet and the fun that acting provides, you will receive the tools and the guidance necessary to advance your craft and take your acting to the next level.
No prior experience is necessary and students of all skill levels are welcome. Separate sessions for younger actors are also available.
